Michael Beloff hosts Masterclass Lecture in Law
30 April 2025
I am thrilled to share the highlights from the recent Masterclass Lecture in Law, hosted at the Vinson Building Auditorium on Thursday 17 April. The event featured the distinguished guest speaker, The Hon. Michael Beloff KC, who captivated the audience, including the University’s Chancellor, Dame Mary Archer, DBE, and Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Harriet Dunbar-Morris, with his reflections on over half a century of litigation and arbitration.

Professor Harriet Dunbar-Morris, Pro Vice-Chancellor Academic and Provost, speaking at the event
Michael’s talk delved into the central characteristics of the art of persuasion, illustrated through examples of both exemplary and flawed advocacy in England, Wales and beyond. His engaging anecdotes from around the world brought the subject to life, offering invaluable insights into the nuances of effective legal practice.
Guests and students alike kept our speaker on his toes with a diverse array of questions. Topics ranged from alternative dispute resolution following the landmark Churchill decision, to the importance of listening and timing in the courtroom. Michael’s responses were both enlightening and entertaining, making for a truly memorable evening.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended and contributed to the success of this event. Your enthusiasm and curiosity made it an enriching experience for all.
