Kathryn J. Friedlander & Philip A. Fine, “The Grounded Expertise Components Approach in the Novel Area of Cryptic Crossword Solving”, Frontiers in Psychology 7:567 (May 2016). DOI: 10.3389/fpsyg.2016.00567.

Dr Fine and Dr Friedlander are both in the Psychology Department at Buckingham, and have a strong interest in expertise and problem-solving, particularly in the area of cryptic crosswords. Both solve crosswords, though Dr Friedlander particularly enjoys the advanced cryptics, and their joint interest resulted in their surveying over 800 cryptic crossword solvers, including many of this country’s top experts. This article reports some of the findings of that survey, as well as outlining a new methodological approach to the study of expertise, involving a much more grounded knowledge of the research population from the very outset of the study. This research relates to the focus of The University of Buckingham’s CREATE research hub (Centre for Research in Expertise: Acquisition, Training, and Excellence).
