Dyslexia Hub: What we do
Dyslexia is a prevalent learning difference, affecting approximately 10% of the general population, with a significant number being first diagnosed during their university years.
However, there are many Further and Higher Education (FE/HE) institutions that lack comprehensive support and awareness initiatives for dyslexia and other Specific Learning Differences (SpLD).
With an increasing number of neurodivergent students entering FE/HE each year, the majority of whom are dyslexic, the University of Buckingham is pioneering a change in this critical area.
We have established a centre within the University of Buckingham that will focus on fostering excellence, research, and innovation in the field of dyslexia and other specific learning differences (SpLDs) within FE/HE.
The Dyslexia Hub aims to raise awareness and develop effective study support strategies for dyslexia and other SpLDs. The initiative seeks to serve as a focal point for innovative pedagogical approaches that could be beneficial not only within our institution but also across other FE/HE institutions in the UK and internationally.
Our vision goes beyond merely raising awareness but aims to address the existing gap in educator training within FE/HE settings. As part of the Dyslexia Hub, we aim to create marketable, specialised courses—both online and in person—to train educators in recognising and supporting dyslexic and neurodivergent students effectively.
Through our research we have found that these initiatives increase grades and retention for neurodiverse students while increasing better learning for all students, producing a truly inclusive learning environment.
The Hub will also focus on generating resources designed to assist dyslexic and post-16 students to excel in their academic endeavours.
The Dyslexia Hub for Innovation & Research in Higher Education is an ambitious initiative to improve the academic journey of dyslexic and neurodiverse students in FE/HE.
If you are interested in enhancing support for neurodivergent students, we warmly invite you to reach out and explore how you can benefit. Moreover, if you think you can contribute to our groundbreaking endeavour, please e-mail dysexiahub@buckingham.ac.uk
