Jess Johnson (BSc Psychology)
Having initially started at another much larger university, transferring to Buckingham in January 2024 is by far one of the best decisions I have made. Having grown up locally, I was always aware of The University of Buckingham, but it was not until I felt lost in a huge cohort of students at a much larger institution that I fully explored what Buckingham had to offer.
A degree at Buckingham is definitely different! Being able to complete a BSc Psychology degree in two years, of course, puts you ahead timewise compared to those following a more conventional degree structure. However, I feel that it is the small class sizes that have been the biggest benefit to me so far. The smaller class sizes, and especially the weekly tutorial teaching, have enabled me to make meaningful connections and friendships with other people on the course, with the diversity of students meaning that despite staying at home to study, I have had the privilege to meet people with a wealth of backgrounds and experiences.
I have also been able to develop my own opinions and arguments that I am confident enough to voice. Additionally, Buckingham’s small size facilitates a greater sense of support throughout the department than you are likely to find elsewhere. We are all known, by name by the lecturers, who clearly have a joy and passion for teaching, but also care greatly about the wellbeing and happiness of their students. The open-door policy means that help and guidance are never difficult to find, and being known on such an individual level has enabled me to be pushed academically, in a genuinely supportive environment.
Before starting at Buckingham, I was slightly concerned that not living in university accommodation might prevent me from truly feeling part of the university, but this is not the case. Plenty of my friends also commute, and there is a wide range of activities to get involved in without needing to live on campus. In fact, one great thing about living at home is the ability to ‘switch off’ from uni life, when I need, much more easily!
Although the 2-year degree is intense, I am currently really looking forward to beginning the second year of my degree, under the guidance of such a wonderful department, before graduating, and hopefully moving on to further study.
