New Centre Launched: Centre for Research on Covert Human intelligence Sources (CR-CHIS)

2 December 2024

BUCSIS are please to announce the launch of the Centre for Research on Covert Human Intelligence Sources (CR-CHIS) This is a pioneering research centre dedicated to advancing the understanding of effective operational practice, ethical frameworks, and methodologies surrounding the management, deployment and protection of covert human intelligence sources (CHIS). This will include research in both a historical and contemporary context. The Centre Director, Dr Ian Stanier said “Covert Human Intelligence Sources, ethically and effectively managed, can contribute critical information that informs intelligence and law enforcement agency operations and investigations. However, this is an under-researched area. By fostering a deeper understanding of the use of covert human intelligence sources, the CR-CHIS aspires to become a global hub for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners navigating the evolving challenges in source use and hopefully, enhance operational practice”.
