The University of Buckingham was like a movie. From the beginning till the end, it was that incredible that even IMDb would give it five stars.
As a Canadian student, choosing to study LLB (Hons) at The University of Buckingham was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Coming from Toronto, a large city, I already had a degree from a university where lecture halls often held more than 500 students. I was the student who sat quietly at the back of the class, but at Buckingham, I found myself in the front. I was seen. The supportive environment, close-knit community, and attentive professors encouraged me to look forward, never back.
Adjusting to life in a new country can be intimidating, but Buckingham made it easier. The School of Law did not just know our names; they took the time to understand our individual strengths and learning styles. One of the most transformative aspects of my experience was the personal tutor system. My tutor was a constant source of encouragement, always checking in on me and ensuring I stayed on track. This level of care and attention is something I had never experienced before. I was a number at my previous university, but in Buckingham I was a name; a person.
Although completing a law degree in two years might sound intense, Buckingham proved it is possible to balance rigorous academics with a fulfilling student life. My degree was from September 2022 – December 2024. The first three months, known as the slow start, eased me into the program and gave me the confidence to pursue passions I never knew existed in myself. I went from being shy to becoming a leader. I ran for Student Representative for my undergraduate program and held the position for nearly two years. I followed my interest in event planning and became the Events Director for the Law Society. Alongside my studies, I worked as a library auxiliary, student ambassador, and part of the OTM bar staff. Despite all these commitments I achieved First Class Honours. At Buckingham, nothing is impossible.
Also, I still made time for a social life. Buckingham’s Student Union ensured there was always something to look forward to such as Quiz Nights, DJ events, and legendary OTM parties with creative themes that I loved dressing up for. These moments made my time at Buckingham unforgettable and I had the chance to meet many amazing students outside of my program.
Living on campus at Verney Park was where I truly found my family. I met friends who became lifelong companions. We supported each other through everything – studying, cooking, late-night chats, and even taking care of each other when we were unwell. Thanks to Buckingham, I now have a family spread across the globe.
Buckingham’s community is what makes it so special. It’s a small town, but that only strengthens the connections you form. You are constantly surrounded by kind-hearted people, from students and staff members to the Friends of the University, who always had time to chat with the students during the week and share their delicious coffee and cookies. Also, enjoying meals at the OTM cafeteria during lunch, surrounded by friends and classmates, were moments that always made me feel connected and never alone.
Now, having graduated from The University of Buckingham, I am in the process of pursuing my National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) exams as I work towards becoming a qualified lawyer in Canada. Even though my time at Buckingham has come to an end, I remain in touch with my professors, who continue to offer guidance and support.
Buckingham changed my life. For me, Buckingham will always be my home away from home.
