Siobhan O’Neill (LLB 2024)
Driven by a desire for personal and professional growth, I turned my interest in law into a reality by pursuing a degree that fitted seamlessly around my full-time job and family responsibilities. The University of Buckingham stood out for its flexible part-time law course, that initially seemed like a supportive environment that understood the challenges faced by students balancing multiple commitments.
From the moment I enrolled, I was struck by the University’s commitment to excellence. The quality of teaching was outstanding, with lecturers who were not only deeply knowledgeable but also genuinely invested in their students’ success. Each in-person seminar felt like a tailored and dynamic discussion, fostering critical thinking and collaboration while building a strong foundation in legal principles. The class sizes and personalised attention helped create a supportive academic community that made even the most complex legal concepts accessible.
The University’s legal clinical support also played a pivotal role in my journey. Through its workshops, networking events, and practical resources, I was exposed to the real-world application of law and gained invaluable insights into various qualification pathways. These experiences inspired me to refine my career aspirations, and they provided me with the tools to explore law firms that aligned with my values and long-term goals.
At the same time, I came to recognise the transferable skills I had gained from my commercial work experience within various fields and my proven ability to balance competing priorities. Managing a full-time job, family responsibilities, and part-time studies required resilience, adaptability, and exceptional time management—qualities I had always practised but came to fully appreciate during my degree. These skills became a critical asset during the application process, as they were recognised and highly valued by law firms for the practical perspective and commercial awareness they brought to the table.
Initially, I was concerned that pursuing a non-traditional route to a law degree might limit my career opportunities. However, during my time at Buckingham, I came to recognise the unique strengths I had developed, as well as the confidence gained through my experiences. With this newfound assurance, I set my sights on Clifford Chance, a Magic Circle firm renowned for its commitment to talent and innovation.
Securing a training contract with them was a milestone I could not have imagined at the start of my journey. Their recognition of my unique blend of skills and experiences was exciting and motivating, reaffirming the importance of perseverance and self-belief. I am now preparing to begin my SQE with Clifford Chance, eager to further combine my academic achievements and professional experience as I embark on the next stage of my legal career.
Looking back, my time at the University of Buckingham was transformative. It not only equipped me with the knowledge and skills required for a career in law but also demonstrated the power of determination, ambition, and a supportive academic environment. For anyone considering a similar path, I am living proof that with the right mindset and resources, it is possible to pursue your dreams and succeed, even when balancing numerous responsibilities. The University gave me more than just a degree—it gave me the confidence to seize new opportunities and the foundation to excel in an ever-evolving profession.
