Liesel Cuschieri (LLB)

Upon having already commenced a Bachelor of Laws degree in my home country, Malta, I came to the realisation that a UK law degree would open many more doors and opportunities in the commercial and corporate legal sectors. Since a UK law degree is globally recognised and prestigious, I decided to pursue such a degree from a highly ranked law school, and this is how my studies at The University of Buckingham started.

Being an accelerated course but still fully recognised as a Bachelor of Laws with honours, The University of Buckingham was the perfect fit. Hence, I decided to simultaneously pursue both law degrees at the same time, in which I was to graduate with two Bachelor of Laws by the end of 2021. Little did I know that my studies would have been pursued in the pandemic era. However, this was a tool that allowed me to not only complete my academic studies but, also obtain legal practice and knowledge from both jurisdictions remotely.

The Street Legal programme allowed me to intern with EMW LLP which was of great commercial law practice insight, and Clifford Chance which provided me with knowledge of Business and Human rights law. Since these were done remotely due to covid I also had the privilege to intern with the Attorney General’s office in Malta shadowing lawyers in leading criminal cases while also being a trainee lawyer and intern at the globally known firm; PricewaterhouseCoopers, in which I am still working with today.

All of these opportunities paved the way to not only achieve a first-class honours degree from The University of Buckingham and another degree from the University of Malta, but also the opportunity to go on to pursue an LLM in legal Practice and SQE exams to eventually become a solicitor and lawyer in both jurisdictions. Although setbacks had indeed presented themselves throughout the way, I could not be more thankful to those lecturers who believed in me and supported me throughout, along with the many true friends and life-long bonds I have formed. Among the successes achieved, my proudest achievement is my smart contracts and blockchain-based dissertation in which I achieved an A, with special thanks to Dr Saad Alrayes and Dr Kerry Purcell who provided extreme knowledge and guidance on the topic.
