Conference at the Victoria and Albert Museum

Academy, Market, Industry: Sculpture between Britain and Italy

The University of Buckingham and the Victoria and Albert Museum are organising a conference that will take place at the Victoria and Albert Museum on the 16 and 17 May.

This two-day conference will explore how artistic exchanges between Britain and Italy influenced sculpture in the 18th and 19th centuries. Papers will explore the evolution of established genres like busts, ideal sculptures, funerary and public monuments, along with copies and adaptations of ancient works. They will also examine how these models spread into decorative sculpture, including reliefs, medallions, and chimneypieces, as well as smaller artworks such as gems, cameos, ivories, and objects made from porcelain, earthenware, and new artificial ‘stones’.

Tickets are available to purchase for either in-person visits (£30-50) or online attendance (£12-£20).

Organised by: Adriano Aymonino (The University of Buckingham), Kira d’Alburquerque (V&A), Albertina Ciani Sciolla (The University of Buckingham) and Andrea Bacchi (Fondazione Federico Zeri).

Sponsored by: Henry Moore Foundation, Istituto Italiano di Cultura, and Stuart Lochhead Sculpture.
