About Me

Hello! I’m Dr Subhi Ashour, the Programme Director in Foundation & Academic Skills. I hold a PhD in Teacher Education, an MRes in Research Methods in Education, an MEd in Language Teaching Education and a first-class honours degree in English Language and Literature. I’m also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).

With over ten years of experience in university teaching, I’m passionate about several key areas in education. Here’s a bit more about what I do:

  • Programme Design: I love creating comprehensive and effective curricula that cater to the diverse needs of our students. I’ve designed foundation academic programmes across various disciplines, embedding essential academic skills into the curriculum.
  • Assessment and Feedback: I have experience in implementing multimedia feedback and rubrics, enhancing students’ feedback literacy to improve their learning outcomes. I focus on developing robust assessment methods to provide students with meaningful feedback.
  • Critical Thinking: As the module lead for teaching critical thinking, I am dedicated to fostering critical thinking skills among students. Beyond my specific module, I aim to embed critical thinking across the curriculum to enhance students’ analytical abilities and intellectual autonomy.
  • Student Engagement: I’m always exploring new strategies to keep students actively involved in their learning journey. I have completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Student Engagement, reflecting my strong commitment to this area.
  • Peer-Assisted Learning & Peer Assessment: I believe in the power of collaborative learning and have implemented peer-assisted programmes and formal summative peer assessment opportunities within the curriculum.
  • Research Methods: As a Certified NVivo Expert, I specialise in qualitative data analysis and have extensive experience teaching these methods at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Mentoring: I mentor new lecturers, providing guidance and support to help them navigate the academic landscape and develop professionally.

My approach to teaching is all about creating an inclusive and stimulating environment where students feel encouraged to think independently. I’m dedicated to innovative teaching methods that truly enhance student learning and engagement. I currently serve as the Deputy Chair of the university’s Learning and Teaching Champions, where I contribute to enhancing teaching practices and promoting excellence in learning across the institution.

Beyond the classroom, I serve as an External Examiner at both Kent University and the University of Aberdeen. I’m also a tutor on Audencia’s PG Certificate in Learning and Teaching Excellence, where I help educators enhance their teaching skills.

As Admissions Tutor, I am responsible for overseeing the recruitment and admission process on the Buckingham Foundation programme. I ensure that our programmes attract a diverse and talented group of students. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions about our admissions process or if you require further information about our programmes.
