The Level 4 Intelligence Analyst Apprenticeship equips professionals with critical analytical, legal, and communication skills to thrive in intelligence-driven environments. Combining practical training with theoretical foundations, this programme prepares apprentices in transforming raw data into actionable insights, and supporting decision-making in sectors such as law enforcement, military, public and private industries.
The Level 4 Intelligence Analyst Apprenticeship is a career-focused programme designed to develop the skills, knowledge, and behaviours necessary for intelligence professionals. Through a combination of structured learning and hands-on experience, apprentices learn to analyse diverse data sources, identify patterns and trends, and produce high-quality intelligence reports that inform decision-making.
The programme covers key areas such as the intelligence cycle, legal protocols, and advanced analytical techniques, including geospatial and network analysis. Apprentices will also gain expertise in handling sensitive materials, adhering to legal frameworks, and employing emerging technologies to process intelligence data.
Throughout the 12-month taught component, participants will engage in modules focusing on intelligence methodologies, scenario-based training, and cutting-edge tools for analysis. The final 6 months include an End Point Assessment (EPA), where apprentices demonstrate their capabilities through a work-based project, presentations, and a professional interview.

Course breakdown
The Level 4 Intelligence Analyst Apprenticeship is structured over 12 months of taught modules and up to 6 months for the End Point Assessment (EPA). Throughout the course, apprentices are guided by experienced instructors and provided with hands-on training to develop skills essential for intelligence-led roles.
In the first year, apprentices focus on building foundational knowledge and practical skills in intelligence analysis, including structured analytic techniques, scenario-based training, and legal protocols for handling sensitive data. Entry requirements
To be eligible for Apprenticeship funding, learners must evidence that they:
- Are eligible to work in England
- Have been ordinarily resident in the EEA, Gibraltar, or the UK for at least the previous three years before the start of the apprenticeship – if this is not the case, please contact apprenticeships@buckingham.ac.uk before applying as there are some exceptions to this rule
- Be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in England
- Cannot be registered on another government funded course at the same time as enrolling on this apprenticeship.
While prior experience in areas such as data analysis, law enforcement, security, or finance is advantageous, it is not mandatory. Candidates should ideally be employed in a role where they can apply the skills and knowledge gained during the apprenticeship to meet programme objectives.
Technical Skills
A foundational understanding of intelligence and analytical concepts, as well as familiarity with relevant technology and software, will be beneficial.
Personal Attributes
Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and an ability to collaborate effectively within a team. Trustworthiness and discretion are essential due to the sensitive nature of the information handled during the programme.
Interview and Assessment
Applicants will be interviewed prior to acceptance onto the programme to assess their suitability. This will include an evaluation of their motivation, relevant skills, and understanding of both the role and the programme requirements.

The University reserves the right to increase course fees annually in line with inflation linked to the Retail Price Index (RPI). If the University intends to increase your course fees it will notify you via email of this as soon as reasonably practicable.
Course fees do not include additional costs such as books, equipment, writing up fees and other ancillary charges. Where applicable, these additional costs will be made clear.
Apprenticeships are fully funded by the employer through the Apprenticeship Levy. The maximum cost for the Apprenticeship is £11,000; this may be less, dependent on your recognised previous learning which will be assessed at interview through a robust initial assessment. There is no cost to the employee undertaking an Apprenticeship.
Your business will be paying the Apprenticeship Levy each month if it:
- Has an annual pay bill of more than £3 million
- Is connected to any companies or charities for Employment Allowance purposes and has a combined annual pay bill of more than £3 million.
The Apprenticeship Levy is an amount paid at a rate of 0.5% of an employer’s annual wage bill and will be paid through Pay as you Earn (PAYE).
