Sean Ashfield (BSc Computing, 2023)
From as long as I can remember, I’ve always been a technical person. I love tinkering with things until I fully understand how they work. When I discovered computing and programming, I instantly knew it was the perfect match for me. Programming truly tested my problem-solving skills and helped me develop a logical mindset that has benefited me in many areas, including my current career.
I found The University of Buckingham after moving to the area, having recently completed a BTEC in Computing at college. Looking to take the next step in my education, I was intrigued by the opportunity to complete my Computing degree in just two years, thanks to the focused course structure Buckingham offers. I attended an open day and was immediately hooked by the campus atmosphere and the excellent facilities, making Buckingham an easy choice for me.
During my time at Buckingham, I made many friends, not only in my own course but across different programs by attending events like the OTM parties. Academically, I faced some challenges, especially as I lacked prior knowledge of A-level Maths. This required me to put in extra effort to achieve the grades I wanted. Despite the hard work, I also made time for extracurricular activities. I was proud to be one of the founding members of the Computer Science Society, which is still going strong today.
After graduating from Buckingham in 2023, I found myself uncertain about the next step in my career. It was then that I came across an opening for a Computer Science teacher. I hadn’t previously considered teaching, but my experience leading sessions in the Computer Science Society, where I taught students new skills like 3D modelling, inspired me to give it a try. The role also offered teacher training, allowing me to become a fully qualified teacher over time.
Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. Teaching has proven to be a rewarding career that challenges not only my subject knowledge but also my soft skills. The skills I’ve developed as a teacher—such as clear communication, leadership, and the ability to explain complex ideas in simple terms—are highly transferable. For example, in a business setting, these skills are invaluable when presenting technical ideas to non-technical stakeholders or leading teams through project management. Teaching has broadened my abilities beyond the classroom, proving that the lessons I’ve learned apply in many different career paths.
