English Literature (single / combined honours)
The study of English Literature at Buckingham is conceived as a serious intellectual engagement with texts and works of art, writers and thinkers, together with their socio-political and cultural contexts, with an emphasis on the Early Modern and Modern Periods (1509 to the present day). We consider literary study in the 21st century to be a frontier discipline, embracing debates emerging from the adjacent fields of philosophy, theology, history and politics, psychology, and the study of communications and the media. More ... You will see from the links to the right of this page that English Literature can be read as a single honours, or in combination with French or Spanish, History, Journalism, and Psychology. As with the rest of Humanities, English maintains small-group teaching, disappearing at other universities, allowing a real immersion in the subject, and thoughtfulness and care in the teaching. The central library has a dedicated Reading Room (the Comino Room) for English Language and Literature, History, Art, Journalism, and Film. The Chandos building has good computer suites and seminar facilities. There is also a unique audio collection of famous poets and critics reading from their work or lecturing.
